Preparing Your Dog for the Summer

Summer is a great time for you and your dog to spend time outside together.  Here are some tips to keep your best friend safe.

  1. Hydration is crucial – Always provide fresh, cool water to prevent dehydration.

  1. Avoid hot pavement – If you can’t hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 5-10 seconds, then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

  1. Provide shade and cooling options – When you dog is outdoors for extended periods of time, provide cooling mats, shaded areas and even cooling bandanas to help regulate their temperature.

  1. Never leave your dog in a hot car – Even for a few minutes, the temperature in a car can rise to dangerous levels.

  1. Limit outdoor exercise – Dogs don’t always know when to stop playing and they want to please us.  For high energy dogs and those that love to play, they rely on you to make responsible choices for them.  Take your dog on walks in the morning or at night when it’s cooler

  1. Protect against pests – Fleas and ticks are more active during summer, so ensure your dog has the proper protection.

  1. Keep up with grooming – Regular brushing and trimming can help prevent overheating, especially for long-haired breeds.

  1. Watch for signs of heat stroke – Heat stroke occurs when you dog is unable to get rid of excess heat.  Symptoms include excessive panting, a rapid heart rate, red gums and excessive drooling. The dog may appear limp, droopy or act like they are extremely tired.  If your dog experiences these symptoms, seek veterinary advice immediately.
