Common Digestive Issues in Dogs and How to Solve Them

Keeping your pet’s digestive health functioning properly is a key factor to maintaining their overall health. If you suspect your pet’s having digestive issues, look for the following signs: excessive gas or burping, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, weight loss or a disinterest in food.

Gas

Your dog’s diet and how they consume their kibble has a big impact on their gut health. Make mealtime more fun and cut down on those belches and gaseous emanations by feeding your precious pooch with a food puzzle. Food puzzles slow down the speed of your pet’s consumption, making mealtimes more fun and decreasing burps and gas.

Diarrhea

If your pup is otherwise normal, most diarrhea cases will clear up after a few days. By feeding food designed for digestibility, ensuring they get plenty of water and rest, your pooch will heal on their own. However, if symptoms persist and are paired with other abnormal behaviors, a trip to the vet is recommended.

Vomiting

If your dog vomits, offer plenty of fresh water and a small, plain meal when the vomiting stops. Watch for symptoms such as lethargy, weight loss or fever that may signal your pet needs a trip to the veterinarian. Sometimes vomiting occurs when your pet eats something it shouldn’t. Common foreign bodies that can cause vomiting and diarrhea include sticks, bones, balls, string, and socks. If you suspect your dog has ingested something, it’s time for a trip to the vet.

Constipation

This is a common digestive issue with dogs and can be caused by a variety of different factors. To help ease your dog’s discomfort, first ensure they have plenty of fresh water and are getting enough exercise. If that isn’t helping, reach out to your vet for other at-home remedies.

Weight Loss

Changes in diet or environment can cause your dog to experience weight loss. Consider if they have been under stress or if there is something else occurring. If you notice significant weight loss in a short amount of time, a trip to the vet is recommended.

Disinterest in Food

If you’ve recently switched your dog’s pet food, they might be reluctant to gobble it up at mealtime. If you notice other symptoms, your dog may be nauseous, constipated, anxious or stressed. You can try adding dog-safe chicken broth to their food to make it softer and more appealing.

Most of the time a healthy diet and access to fresh water are all you need to keep your pup looking and feeling in tiptop shape. The right diet is important to a pet’s overall well-being and can even help pets address stress, from environmental changes to poor eating decisions.
